“挖墻腳”本意是指將墻的下半部挖掉，致使墻的全體失衡而坍毀。比如“從基本上搞毀壞（undermine the foundation），使對手不克不及告捷（prevent the success of an enemy）”，為不好詞。

現如今，“挖墻腳”尋常指“從競爭對手處挖取干系人才”，英文可以翻譯為“poach talents （from）”，偶爾也有“搶走他人的目標（steal one’s girlfriend/boyfriend）”的意思。
